Topics [ Australian Platypus platinum bullion coin ]

BULLION BARS AND COINS

We’re delighted to announce the release of the 2012 Australian Platypus.

Struck from 1oz of 99.95% pure platinum, the Australian legal tender coin features an extremely attractive design of a diving platypus. No more than 30,000 coins will be released.

Issued for the first time in 2011, the Australian Platypus sold out its initial annual mintage, reflecting healthy investor interest in platinum as a safe-haven hard asset in times of financial uncertainty.

•   1300 201 112 Australia Only (local call cost)

    Hi Stephen,

Could you please tell me why the 2012 coin was released on 05 December 2011?
Wasn't the 2011 coin just released on 01 March 2011?

They really are great looking coins, I hope you guys at Perth could mint a range of bullion platinum coins or maybe bring us further releases in 2013, 20114 etc.

The collector site has the Platinum Coins - Discover Australia The Dreaming Series but these coins aren't bullion so although they are fabulous coins they may not suited bullion investors.

I hope, one-day, we can bye these platinum coins on the bullion web-site.

Well done again for a very stackable and collectable platinum coin, they truly are a great design and fwiw, I reckon the limited mintage is great at 30,000 coins.

Have a great Christmas and I hope you and the team at Perth can put your feet up and have a coldy over Christmas.

    Regards

    Hi Billy Black Smith

The sell out of the 2011 Australian Platypus was the key factor in bringing the launch date of the 2012 version forward.

Thanks for your kind Christmas wishes. The very best to you from The Perth Mint,

    Regards

    Billy Black Smith says:

    You know!

It's a shame Perth haven't got a few different size platinum Platypus coins; back when we had the Koala platinum bullion coins from 1988 to 2000, we could buy bullion platinum coins ranging in size from 1 kilo to 1/20oz.

I think the Platypus design, is clean, fresh, modern and fwiw a great platinum coin that surely has the interest of investors and the potential to provide good capital growth in the coming years.

Often new collectors and stackers don't realize the quality of the bullion coins that Perth producers; this can be over-come by minting fractional coins so that those who have never bought platinum before can get their "foot-in-the-door" so to speak.

Stephen, not everyone can afford a full ounce of platinum, just like they can't afford an ounce of gold but they can sample the quality of a platinum coin at an affordable price if Perth had fractional "Plats" (My new name for Platinum Platypus Coins).

So here's what I think the market would like in the fractional Plat range and why.

The archived mintages of the Koala platinum coins, indicate that fractional sizes were very sort after, obviously you are aware of this Stephen, but I'll add the link so that other people can view the data for themselves.

    http://www.perthmint.com.au//documents/The_Australian_Koala_Platinum_Bullion_Coin_Series_1988_-_2000_1.pdf

So it would seem that there is a demand for fractional coins but, again, if you look at the mintages and mintage limits there are anomalies that can fill consumer demand.

First of all, the mintage limits for the old Koala coins was too high, and...imo...there should never be an unlimited mintage for Plats.

By keeping the mintage to a reasonable quantity Perth would not only invigorate, stackers but also collectors.
Investors who buy bullion, want two things to happen when they purchase Plats, they want a bullion coin to have the potential to have numismatic value and they want a coin that has the capacity for capital growth. We also want "limited" mintages.

You guys at Perth have conquered one aspect of what Perth has always stood for and that is, you produce bullion coins that are specimen-like or they look as if they are proof, so you have for-filled the goal of quality on a worldwide basis.

That's just not my raving on, anyone could send a roll of coins to be graded and come back with quite a few slabbed MS 69 or 70 coins.
In addition, anyone can view The Perth Mint coins on the secondary market to see that even with the current dip in precious metal prices, Perth Mint coins are selling extremely well and a huge margin above the spot price.

So what size mintage for the platinum fractionals?

    Answer:
    1/20th - 8,000
    1/10th - 10,000
    1/4 - 8,000
    1/2 -8,000
    1oz - 30,000 (Already good)

In conclusion, I think there is enough evidence to indicate that investors would purchase fractional bullion coins; we've missed having them from the year 2000 until 2011, hopefully in the years to come you may consider the smaller size bullion coins that can compliment the Perth Mint Bullion site.

    Kind regards
