Evolution Of The Koala

BULLION BARS AND COINS

Like kangaroos and kookaburras, koalas are a favourite animal symbol of Australia for millions of people around the world.

In 2007, when preparing a new Australian entrant to the international silver bullion coin market, the koala was the obvious design theme for The Perth Mint to choose.

The Australia Koala is now a well-established and sought-after option for silver investors. Offered in 1 kilo, 10oz, 1oz and 1/2oz sizes each year, it has attracted considerable interest as recent sales and mintage figures confirm.

The 2012 Australian Koala is scheduled to become available for purchase on our bullion website and through our worldwide dealer network on 3 January.

The annual silver Koala is also a pleasing collectable. For this reason, 1oz releases can be acquired in illustrated packaging.  The 2012 1oz Australian Koala collectable version will be available through our numismatic website and dealer network on the same date.

Australian Koala silver coins have evolved to the present stylish incarnation as the following table portrays.

The koalas for 2007, 2008 and 2009 are all pretty and cute but I don't understand the rocky background - that ruined it.

The 2010 koala - again nice and cute, background clean and simple.

The 2011 koala - ok, the baby looks naughty  : )

    The 2012 koala - zzzzz ?

    To Perth Mint Blog

Is the Mint aware why the customers prefer Kookaburras instead of Koalas?
Is it not time to produce more Kookaburras than Koalas?

    Thanks

    Hi Marcelo

Thanks for commenting. Kookaburras are indeed popular. As you know, the 1oz release has always been a  limited mintage product and as previously announced, the 2012 version is now effectively sold out.

In some of our global markets there is similar interest in the Koala. No mintage limits apply to annual Koalas. As a result, we are now focused on offering 2012 Koala coins until the launch of the 2013 series.

    Kind regards

The "rocky background" was quite popular in America - apparently.

    Hi there,

One suggestion...  how about considering the idea of commissioning a design from a famous artist, australian or overseas.

Go back in time, and just imagine if today there were Perth Mint Koala's whose designs had been drawn by...  Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, etc. Wow...

Ha ha...  I wonder if there would be any numismatic premium on these  :-)

    Thanks for the update Stephen.

The 2012 design is very good and will be another great bullion coin.

Is there any information regarding the 5oz "Proof" for 2012 and 2013?

The 2011 5oz Koala proof coin was a ripper, so hopefully we will se it again next year.

I love collecting and stacking Koalas.

Anyway, thanks for the update on the Koala bullion coin release and facts.

Nice to hear from you again BBS. Although I can't confirm 100% at this stage, it's looking increasingly likely that we'll issue a 5oz silver proof Koala in 2012. Keep an eye on our numismatic site for an announcement next year.

Can there ever be enough koalas?  Personally, I'd like to see the koalas evolve further...
Maybe a series of coins that include celebrities that look like koalas?  For example, The John Howard Koala Coin.
    Now that's a winner!

I was  very happy to view  the latest bullion mintages, particularly the 2011 - 1oz Silver Koala.

Could you please advise when the 2011 Australian Koala 1oz  Silver Coin (Carded) mintage will be available there's nothing on the collector site as yet?
