A Look Back at Kangaroo/Nuggets Ahead of 2012's Release

Topics [ Australian Kangaroo gold bullion coins ]

BULLION BARS AND COINS

With just two weeks to go before the launch of Australia’s premier gold bullion coin series for 2012, here’s a nostalgic look back at previous kangaroo designs spanning gold’s ten or more year ‘bull run’.

Until 2007, these coins were known by their original name - Australian Nuggets. In fact the design theme changed to Australia’s most iconic marsupial in 1990, a fact not formally acknowledged in the inscription until 2008.

The Kangaroo is one of the world’s most successful 99.99% pure gold bullion coin programs. The coins are limited by mintage (bar the 1 kilo release), an exclusive feature that for some adds a higher degree of collectability to these annual designs.

Add a poll for preferred design over that period?

2010 is the standout to my eye.

I nominate 2007 as another classic!

Long Live the Classic Nuggets says:

Would have been ideal if they had stuck to a uniform font type and size then it will be recognisable as being part of a series.

Background themes and settings are important too, thus far we've got a mix bag of both natural and artificial (map, stripes, stars).

I prefer the classic look, ones still being used for the larger ones such as the kilo roo.  They're crisp, clean and timeless !  No overgrown grass about that.

I am a proud owner of a 1/10 oz Kangaroo coin for every year since the first one came out in 1990. Would love to own an 1 oz of each but as a teenager back then, that's all I could afford and it seems nice to keep the collection the same size now.

The silver price is relatively low, but there are now (20/10/11) no silver bars for sale by the Perth mint. Why? Is stock only available when the silver price is high?

I love the 2000 one design, because it's simple and elegant.
