RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

The silver market saw record demand in 2015, according to the World Silver Survey 2016, which was produced on behalf of the Silver Institute by the GFMS Team at Thomson Reuters (GFMS).

Jewellery, coin and bar, and photovoltaic sectors all posted new highs, it said, helping to boost total silver demand to 1.17 billion ounces last year.

Overall silver supply to the market was lower, led by the continued weakness in silver scrap sales.

Last year’s supply and demand scenario led to the third successive annual silver market deficit, reaching 129.8 million ounces, more than 60% larger than 2014 and the third largest on record, it said.

Indispensable Silver

PRECIOUS METAL SERIES - 2

As one of the first metals to be used by man, silver has been sought-after for 5,000 years. Archaeological evidence indicates silver was originally mined about 3,000 BC in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey).

Lustrous in appearance, silver is also malleable and ductile. Being both easy to work and pleasing to the eye, it has long been associated with the manufacture of jewellery, art, cutlery and tableware.

Today, silver is also valued for innumerable applications in industry. Unsurpassed as a conductor of heat and electricity and also highly reflective, its uses are continuing to expand in hi-tech areas such as electronics, solar and biotech - to name a few.

Because silver is durable, stable and comparatively rare, it also possesses qualities that make it ideal for use as money.

It was first coined in Lydia around 600 BC. The phrase “rich as Croesus” is derived from the Lydian king famed for his wealth!

Early silver coins spread to regions inhabited by Greeks, and through trade across the entire Mediterranean region. In testament to its historic role as a monetary metal, silver continues to mean ‘money’ in a variety of languages, including ‘shekel’ (Hebrew), ‘argent’ (French), and ‘plata’ (Spanish).

It’s fair to conclude that many aspect of mankind’s economic, cultural and technological progress would have been vastly different were it not for the indispensable benefits of silver.

IN THE NEWS

Bloomberg reports that hedge funds are the least bullish on silver in almost four years due to anticipated slower growth. Yet investors’ holdings are near a record as they side with analysts predicting a rally on global central bank moves to bolster growth.

“Investors and analysts are bullish on expectations central banks will do more to stimulate economies, expanding consumption and increasing the allure of precious metals as a store of value.”

From London, John Stepek sympathises with silver investors who have been on a ‘maniacal ride’ in recent times. He suggests gold will “see another burst of investor enthusiasm before long”, dragging silver along for the ride.

Investors need not worry about hedge funds that “probably think of themselves as being the ‘smart’ money, but the evidence to back that up is thin on the ground,” he writes.

What’s your favourite silver bar?

BULLION BARS AND COINS

Check out Bazzbian's channel if you’re thinking about collecting silver investment bars. This uploader’s clips show a variety of stunning silver bars from around the world, but we were especially interested to see his recently acquired pre-1988 Perth Mint cast bar.

Stamped with its own specific weight and a variety of official markings, the bar has plenty of charm compared to the newer variety. It also displays the scars of many owners down the years.

In fact it’s the ‘old character’ created by “lots of nice dings and scratches and a big dent” that this collector really likes. “I have to say this is my favourite bar,” he says.

Thanks for sharing Bazzbian.
